Kaneka Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Kazuhiko Fujii) received the 2025 JSBBA Award for Achievement in Technological Research from Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry (Chairman: Makoto Nishiyama; hereinafter JSBBA) for ‘the development and commercialization of microorganisms for the production of KANEKA Biodegradable Polymer Green Planet™’, and the award ceremony was held at the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry in Sapporo on March 4.March 28, 2025
JSBBA is an academic society established in 1924 with the aim of promoting progress in basic and applied research in the fields of Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry thereby contributing to the development of science, technology and culture, and to the improvement of human welfare. This JSBBA Award for Achievement in Technological Research is given to those who have achieved notable and technical achievements of practical use in the fields of Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry. This is the fourth time we have received this award since 2016, when we received it for ‘Technical Research and Development for the Commercial Production of the Active Form of Coenzyme Q10’.
KANEKA Biodegradable Polymer Green Planet™ (hereafter, Green Planet) is a 100% biomass-derived biodegradable polymer developed by Kaneka based on our desire to provide environmentally friendly solutions that do not depend on petroleum resources. Due to its biodegradability into CO2 and water by microorganisms living in soil and seawater, it can contribute to solving the problem of marine plastic pollution.
Since we began research and development of Green Planet in the early 1990s, we have continued to consider industrialization by combining our proprietary polymer technology and biotechnology. As a result, demand for this product is growing around the world. This award is recognition of our efforts towards the implementation of this technology in society.
Based on our mission of "KANEKA thinks 'Wellness First'.", Kaneka provides value globally as a solution provider. Based on the development of technologies and applications using our proprietary polymer technology and biotechnology, we will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by promoting Green Planet on a global scale.
